Interns & Externs

Internship

Great Basin offers a one year internship program to doctors who have completed their education at a nationally accredited veterinary school. We aim to provide our interns with a solid foundation in general practice, with the ability to pursue interests in surgery, sports medicine, reproduction, and internal medicine, and anesthesia. We encourage the development of personal interests through case involvement, weekly rounds presentations/journal clubs on topics chosen by our intern, and mentorship from our veterinarians. Interns begin with full supervision and slowly progress to independence throughout the year.

Our facilities include a surgical suite and padded recovery stall, three treatment rooms, stallion collection facilities, and lameness evaluation areas with both soft and hard ground.

Prerequisites for application include graduation from a nationally accredited veterinary school, a letter of intent, CV, and three letters of recommendation. A license to practice in the state of Nevada and California are required. Priority will be given to applicants who have visited prior to application.

Please see our AAEP Avenues listing for more information about our internship.

Externship

Students enrolled in veterinary school at any level (year 1-4) are welcome to visit Great Basin for an externship. Our externs accompany doctors on their calls, including emergencies, and assist with patient treatments. Visits may be scheduled throughout the year with a maximum stay of 1 month. We have on site accommodations for 1 student, although additional externs are welcome to visit concurrently if they can provide their own housing.

Prerequisites for externship application include a CV, letter of intent, and specific dates you would like to visit. Please address these materials to Dr. Kelsey Tanner at [email protected] Externs must provide their own liability insurance (which can be done here.)

Please see our AAEP Avenues listing for more information about our externship.
